About City

Montreal, situated on an island in the Saint Lawrence River and named after the triple-peaked hill at its center called Mt. Royal, stands as the largest city in the Quebec province of Canada. The boroughs of Montreal, once independent cities, encompass diverse neighborhoods, ranging from the cobblestoned, French colonial Vieux-Montréal, featuring the Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica at its center, to the bohemian Plateau.

This city, known as Montréal in French, holds the status of being the second most-populous city in Canada and serves as the primary metropolis of the Quebec province. Occupying approximately three-fourths of Montreal Island, the largest within the Hochelaga Archipelago comprising 234 islands, Montreal is strategically positioned near the confluence of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers. The city covers an area of 141 square miles (365 square km), while its metropolitan area extends over 1,644 square miles (4,259 square km). The population, as of 2016, stood at 1,704,694 within the city and 3,824,221 in the metropolitan area.

As spring arrives, Montreal comes to life, especially in May, with an average temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius). Although May may bring some rain, it marks a favorable time for outdoor events and festivals, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the city's vibrant atmosphere.

Key attractions in Montreal include Mount Royal Park, Old Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica, Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, Montreal Botanical Garden, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Old Port of Montreal, La Grande Roue de Montreal, Montreal Science Centre, Underground City, Parc des Rapides, and Biosphere. Each of these landmarks contributes to the city's diverse cultural and recreational offerings, making Montreal a captivating destination for exploration and discovery.
